Foreword by Derek Hartopp

The purpose of this website, based in the Isle of Man, is to get a better deal from both the Manx and UK governments, for all pensioners.  It will also act as a platform for discussion, and to promote the general well being of all our more senior members of society.  It is run entirely on a voluntary basis.

During my time in the Isle of Man, the subject of pensions seems to have become more and more controversial.  We have seen tremendous hikes in the price of gas, electricity and rates, while pensions have risen at annual rates that have varied between 0.7 and 2.8%.

It takes little imagination to see that, if such trends continue, expenditure on those items alone will eventually exceed our income.  Something has to be done first, if we are not to freeze or starve - or both.

Would it be possible to follow the practice of airlines, and include a variable "fuel cost supplement" in the pension?  Or replace rates by a system of local income tax?  At present, those on the lowest income, pay the greatest proportion of it in total taxes, and other unavoidable costs like heating.

A source of contention in the Isle of Man is the awarding of the "Manx Supplement", an extra 50% to on basic pension, to only those with 10 years or more of national insurance paid to the Manx government.  The rest of us paid the same in the UK, from where funds were transfered to the Manx government to pay the pensions of "come-overs".
This practice is deemed to be divisive and discriminatory.  We all have to pay the same prices for goods and services, and we all contribute financially and socially to the Island.  Its payment is seen by many as an admission by the government that the basic pension is not enough.
The I.O.M. Pensioners Association has been formed to negotiate for the Supplement to be paid on a residential basis, rather than N.I. contributions.

Pensioners' needs are of course not only financial.  We need the benefit of a good health service.  We need to take an active part in society.  Life today is becoming so dependent on the use of computers and the Internet, that we need it to be made easy and affordable for us.  The style of music we enjoy is becoming so rare these days.  Let's do something to bring it back.

This site will continue to develop.  Please keep watching.  Put it on your "favourites".  Your own opinions will be welcome.  Please e-mail them to me, or get other family members to do it.  Apologies for a few remaining technical blips, which I hope will soon be rectified, and, as none of us are perfect, please point out any spelling and typing errors.
